Nancy Owens: Bio

Nancy Owens

Nancy Owens grew up in Manhattan and has lived in Northport, NY since 1974. She summers on Morrill Pond in Hartland, Maine. She has a master’s degree in education and teaches children with learning differences in a public school setting. Nancy serves on the Board of Directors of the Long Island Yoga Association as the vice president, edits their quarterly newsletter and has recently been responsible for booking the presenters for 2008. Nancy currently teaches yoga and meditation at her charming home studio, as well as the St. Francis Hospital's DeMatteis Center, and for Northport/East Northport Community Education. September 2007 began her first session as a trainer of yoga teachers. She is available for private/group or corporate sessions in Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction. She will also make home visits to the elderly or infirm for breathing and gentle body work. Credentials

Nancy has and continues to study and practice yoga and meditation with many internationally renowned teachers since 1996.

Nancy is currently studying Thai Yoga Massage with Jyothi Watanabe, senior teacher of the Lotus Palm School in Montreal.

She completed a 7 day residential training with Jon Kabat-Zinn in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction in 2004. She has studied and practiced Vipasana Meditation in the tradition of The Insight Meditation Society since 1996.

Nancy recieved the Three Jewels and the Five Mindfulness Trainings from Thich Nhat Hanh in 2003 and was given the Dharma name of "Tranquil Ease of the Heart" by Master Trung Quang Nhat Hanh of the 42nd generation of the Lam Te Dhyana School.

She has studied Kundalini Yoga with Ravi Singh and Gurmuhk.

Nancy received 200 hour certification from the Yoga Teacher's Training Institute on Long Island in 1999 and 500 hour certification in 2001.

Nancy continues her study of yoga and meditation attending monthly workshops and weekend retreats on a consistent basis to bring her students lively, interesting and eclectic classes that serve the body, mind and spirit of each student.

Yoga Alliance has approved Nancy as an "E-RYT 500," indicating that she has had both the training and teaching experience to reach this milestone. The Less Stress Yoga Teacher Training meets the standards of Yoga Alliance.

Additionally, Nancy is licensed by NYS as a special education teacher for grades K-12. She is certified by Wilson Language Training in their reading system and offers private tutoring in reading to children and adults with serious reading disabilities. Nancy has experience with the autistic population as well and offers private 1:1 work from both the academic and yogic/stress reduction paradigms.
